Pegu is situiated only 80 km from Yangon. Bago is the capital of Bago devision. Before it was known as Ussa city and Hanthawaddy city. They have many famous pagodas and interesting place. There are Kyait Pun Pagoda,Shwethalyaung(reclining Image), Shwe Maw Daw Pagoda, Mahazedi Pagoda, Hinthagon Paya, Kha khat Wai Kyaung, a new Hanthawaddy airport and Kanbawzathadi palace.

 

Kyait Pun Pagoda is 5 km from Bago on the Yangon Road.It was built by religious king Damazedi in 1476. It consist of 30 meters four sitting Buddha palace back to back around a huge square pilers.The four Buddha are Kakusana Buddha, Konnagamana Buddha, Kassapa Buddha and Gawdama Buddha.

 

Shwethalyaung Pagoda is a little km from raliway station.It was donated by king Migadepa in 994 AD.It is 55 meters long and 16 meters high, it is a good nine meters longer than the reclining Buddha at Wat Po in Bangkok.Continuing beyond the Shwethalyaung Pagoda brings you to the great stupa.That is Mahazedi Pagoda.

Mahazedi Pagoda was construted by king Bayinnaung in 1560.The tooth, the stone almsbowl and other relics and objects were enshirned in Mahazedi Pagoda, which was built in the model of Maha-Cetiya in Sri-Lanka.

 

Maha Kalayani Sima (or)Ordination hall was built by king Dhamazedi in 1476. It is a prototype of the Kalayani sima of Srilanka.

 

One of the oldest pagoda in Bago is Shwemawdaw. It is high is 114 meters .It completely dominate the town.It is over a thousand years old.Manasala and Sullathala who brought the hairs and enshrined the sacred hairs in the Sudasana hillock and built the Shwemawdaw Pagoda. North of the downtown, one of the three largest monastrie is Kha Khat Wain Kyaung.

 

Hinthagone Pagoda stands east of Bago.It was builds by Ukhanty who was hermit monk. He was also the architect of Mandalay Hill.It has a good view over Bago from the platform of the top.

 

According to the legend before Bago a small mound appeared above the surface of the ocean. It was the point where land was first visible in the water. The two hinthas came down for  the rest but the land was just enough for one bird. So while the male was touching ground , the female was landed on the back of the male. It is said that anyone who married a Bago girls sure to be hen-pecked believe it or not.

 

The Buddha said that,1660 years after his death, that land would be a capital. Firstly, this island was found by Indian merchants while crossing the ocean.They burried some trays to mark that land belong to them. Secondly the land was found by Myanmar. They burried some peas above the trays. Lastly this land was found by Mon. They wanted that island.So they put some iron hooks under the peas and trays to prove that they found it fast. Therefore that island was possessed by Mon and it was called Bagawwa in Mon.Bagawwa means Hintha island.After many years elapsed, Bagawwa was changed to Bagaw, then Bagaw to Bago and Bago to Pegu. And then, turned to Bago.

 

Another intrest is Kanbawzathadi. It was built by king Bayinnaung in 1553 Bago is most useful city.The main product of the Bago is rice. Other products are dried fish,solute fish, teak and cheroots.In fact, Bago is the most essential city in our country for you.
