The capital city of Myanmar, formely called Rangoon in English,founded by king Alongpaya in 1755. Over 350 sq km in area,with a population of about 6 million. Evergreen and cool with lush tropical trees, shaddy parks and beautiful lakes, Yangon has earned the name of the Garden City of the East. The name Yangon means “End of Strife. Architectural styles from Europe was copied and reproduced here in many of the government and private buildings in what is known as the colonial architectural style. The trend continued until the time of independence in 1948.

The dometic airlines:Myanmar Airways,Yangon Airways, Air Mandalay and Air Bagan have regular flights to Mandalay,Bagan,Heho,kang Tong and other tourist destinations.The Yangon City, known as Dagon in ancient time was situiated in the southern part of Myanmar.Yangon is not only the biggest city in Myanmar but also a capital of Myanmar.It is 20 miles away from the sea and it lies on dagger shaped peninsula at the confluence of Hling River, the Pazundaung creek and the river. Yangon is now the largest and most prominent city it originated as a small and humle fishing village.
The city of Okkalapa also stood on the present site of Yangon, since 2500 years before. At the time the city was undeveloped. In 11th century,Dagon in lower Myanmar was just a little fishing village.King Alaungpaya arrived in Dagon in May 1755 after he had fought and seized lower Myanmar.And then the name Dagon was changed to yangon. It’s total area was a mere 6 square furlongs with a population of just 10000.In that old city of Yangon, there were very few timbre structures such as monasteries and barracks for the Myanmar monasteries and barracks for the Myanmar Military and all other buildings were made of bamboo.In February 1841, part of the city was destroyed in a fire.
In 1842, King Tharayaddy moved to yangon and the town was renamed Aung Myay Aung Nin instead of Yangon. At the time, the population of the city was just 30000. The town built by king Tharayaddy lasted only 10 years. The residential areas of the town were damaged by the second Anglo-Myanmar war in 1842.And a large part the town was destroyed. When the colonial British seized and occupied Yangon, the town was in a hopless condition.Dr.Willion Montgomery and Captain Frasher drew up the new plam of a modern city.According to the plan,Montgomery Road, Fraser Road ,Strand Road and Dalhousie Road are formed.And they constructed the City Hall north east of the Sule pagoda.At that time,under the renovation.Yangon city was the most beautiful and cleanest city in South East Asia.
By the time Myanmar had regained independence on 4th January 1948.Immediately after independence, multicoloured insurgent groups rose up in rebellion against the Government.The model city of Yangon was destroyed in three years. In 1958, the Caretaker Government assumed power.During the era of this Government, the new towns were built at Thakets, South and North Okkalapa.The Revolutionary Council had assumed power in 1962.
In 1964, some of the township and new towns were absorbed into the territory of the Yangon Municipality.In that time, the population of Yangon was above 2 million. In Septmber 18, 1988, Tatmadaw(the Myanmar Armed Forces) had to unavoidably assume state Power.
The Government made reconstruction to the old building and built the new towns such as
South and North Dagon,Shwe Pyay Thar, Hlaing Thar yar and so on.Beside,upgrading of roads, reconstruction of new roads were made.For recreation and shopping, new parks and markets are opened.So present day Yangon is so beautiful and modernised.
The principal hilights of Yangon city are Shwedagon Pagoda,Kaba Aye Pagoda ,Reclining Buddha,Malamu Pagoda,National Museum,Bojyoke Aung San Park and Kandawkyi,Bogyoke market,the zoological gardens and The people’s Square and the People park and so on.
